:: LEONIE AND ROBERT WEDDING ARTICLE
The Wedding
We reported last issue that Darren's manager Leonie got married and had a baby boy. What we can now reveal is that Darren actually married Robert and Leonie in his house in San Francisco and kept it a secret from everyone until January this year when he threw Leonie and Robert a wedding reception in Sydney.
The story goes as such: Leonie and Robert had intended to simply go to a registry office and get married by a court official. When they looked into doing so, the friendly folk at Marin Civic Centre suggested a "friend" could be deputised for one time only and marry them instead.
You don't have to be a brain surgeon to work out who they chose! Darren had the power vested in him and indeed married Leo and Robert in his living room surrounded by every candle in the house and "about three hudred dollars worth of rose petals".
As many of you may know, Darren has a very special connection to Leonie as she came to work for him after her father passed away. Darren says he dreamed that Leonie's father Michael came to him in a dream and asked him to take care of his daughter. In turn, Darren credits Leonie as "literally saving my life" during a very dark time in his life and the two have been inseparable ever since.
Throwing Leonie the wedding that her father would have thrown her was a huge challenge. They wanted it to be something fun and non traditional but still romantic. A house in Sydney was hired on the water in Drummoyne and the preparations were underway. On the night, the house was decorated with remnants from the set of the movie "Moulin Rouge"... Wonderful food and cocktails were served by Belinda Franks - Sydney's best caterer... Robert and Darren worked up an amazing DJ set and true to form, Darren did his only ever wedding singer gig.
Colin Skals (Daren's production manager from on tour) was hired to set up a P.A big enough for a theatre show, complete with lights and effects. Darren and Stuart Hunter (from the Aria performnce) did a 5 song acoustic set for the 100 or so invited guests. Rather than sing his own material, Darren sang 5 songs the couple love.
He sang
Live for real - K's choice
Goodbye Lovers - Depeche Mode
The First Time - U2
IceCream - Sara McLachlan
Love is Blindness - U2
This performance was recorded and hopefully one day you'll get to hear it. All in all it was a wonderful and magical evening for all.
