DARREN HAYES GAY AND PROUD - October 6 2006
By Cameron Adams | Source: Herald Sun

Gay singer Darren Hayes has spoken for the first time about his decision to come out.

Darren Hayes Hayes, who "tied the knot" with partner Richard Cullen in June under Britain's law on same sex unions, said he was not concerned about any potential impact on his career. "If I've lost any fans because I'm gay, that's OK," Hayes said yesterday.

"I wouldn't want somebody to buy my record who would judge me because of sexuality. To me that's the opposite of who I am as a person.

"But I've been overwhelmed at the positive reaction: there really hasn't been anything negative.

"It has restored my faith in humanity."

Hayes said he chose to come out once he was settled in his personal life: "I always knew when I settled down with 'the one' I'd have no problems talking about my private life.

"Yeah I'm married. I married a boy, I'm gay, but not much else about me has changed.

"I think I was just waiting for someone to just print it as a fact.

"It just so happened that around the time people stopped saying: 'Is he or isn't he?' and wrote: 'Why hasn't he come out yet?' was around the time I got married.

"I'm proud of the fact I never lied about my sexuality. I've never been ashamed of who I was."

He also spoke out in support of gay marriage: "In my case, if two people want to be monogamous and grow old together, I can't see how that's a bad thing."

DARREN HAYES 2007 NEW MUSIC NEWS - Sept 28 2006
Darren Hayes in the studio with fresh new talent and a time machine making an epic double record.

In a famous London studio where gold and platinum discs of some of the biggest English records in pop history adorn the walls, Darren Hayes is holed up with new producer Justin Shave and a relic from the past: A Fairlight CMI Synthesizer.

For those unfamiliar with the instrument, in the early 80’s this prototype sampler was the backbone of cutting edge electronic records by artists such as Peter Gabriel, Nick Rhodes, Jean-Michel Jarre and Kate Bush, to name but a few.

And this instrument has become the centerpiece of Hayes’ new sound.

For the next 3 months, Darren and producer Justin Shave have set up base in a North London studio. Here they will work through the lengthy list of potential songs up for selection for the final cut. Vintage synths, ancient relics and brand new home made contraptions litter the floor.

Shave was a wild card choice for the position of producer on Hayes’ first record since his split with Sony. He first got Darren’s attention via his work with his London based dance outfit Etherfox who are signed to Shapeshifter’s label Nocturnal. Introductions led to a brief stint together on stage during Hayes’ triumphant sold out U.K tour this year. When the tour reached Sydney Australia’s famous Opera House, the camaraderie led to an invitation to work together in the studio. But, if Hayes is honest, something other than Shave’s electronic pedigree caught his attention.

“He made his own electronic instrument and I’d never seen anything like it before in my life,” Hayes explains.

“ I saw him building it like some mad scientist back stage at the Apollo in London. We were five minutes away from going on stage and he was knee deep in circuit boards and volume knobs. Very surreal!”

Hayes admits he didn’t understand how the machine worked – but it sounded incredible.

“This guy had built his own instrument with a soldering iron and his bare hands. I knew he was the one!”

The record began pre production in the U.S in July with veteran Hayes collaborator Robert Conley (2004’s The Tension and the Spark). Having written what he describes as ‘shed loads’ of material, Hayes came back to the U.K armed with a bunch of tracks.

The Phoenix Arizona sessions with Conley produced what Hayes is describing as a major portion of a conceptual section of the record - a song suite that will feature on one side of the double record.

“It’s still pop music, it’s still melodic but it’s epic, cinematic and experimental” Hayes explains.

“ I had so much bottled up – so much I wanted to say – that I didn’t so much want to make a double record as had to. It just became a necessity”. He continues, “ Some of my favorite records were double records. Prince’s’ Sign o the Times’ and Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’. Both titles came at pivotal times in the careers of those artists. And they happen to be my favorite things they ever did. The ‘double record’ has a reputation for being terribly ambitious and fraught with disaster. But every so often there’s a brilliant one. Sounds cocky but that was a challenge I wanted. I needed to take on something of this scale.”

Ambitious? Yes. Crazy? Maybe. But don’t call it a concept record.

“It is conceptual in parts,” Hayes explains, “but that’s really only in comparison with today’s mp3 buying fast food consumer mentality. Sometimes albums are just a collection of unrelated songs. This is not the case with me. It’s a very thorough undertaking of an idea, both musically and thematically. Stretching it out over a longer set gives me the freedom to really explore a lot of territory.”

Recording will take place until mid December with final mixing from January 2007 with Mark ‘Spike’ Stent. The record is due for release later in 2007.

SAVAGE SONG YOU WON'T HEAR - Sept 17 2006
John Woodruff, who launched multi-million-selling pop duo Garden has refused to allow one of their songs to be used on a new CD marking 20 years of the ARIA Awards. Savage Garden's Daniel Jones and Darren Hayes broke records in 1997 when they won 10 ARIAs for their self-titled debut album, a feat that has not been bettered. It made Savage Garden a natural choice for the anniversary CD, but manager John Woodruff has denied the Australian Recording Industry Association access to the band's songs. "We were asked to join in and we declined,'' says Woodruff, who mortgaged his house to pay for Savage Gardens debut album in the mid-1990s. "The band is not shunning the ARIAs - it was my decision.'' - Source

WILLIE WILLIAMS TALKS TO PEOPLE MAGAZINE
Willie Williams, tells PEOPLE. ".... As far as anyone who knows him, he's been 'out' for years. He did feel the pressure because he'd do interviews with Australian press, and he'd say he had his partner Richard, and they'd still ask, 'Are you gay?' And he'd say, 'My partner is called Richard.' They just want the quote: 'Yes, I'm gay.' It's not that he doesn't want to give the quote, it's just that it's not a big deal."

MESSAGE FROM DARREN
Source: darrenhayes.com
Monday, 17 July 2006
I very rarely make comments about my private life.

But today, as I'm about to begin 6 months in the studio to record what I hope to be the best record of my career, I feel an overwhelming gratitude for the past 10 years of being a performer. Most recently, I've been moving toward a career that is more closely aligned with 'art' than it is 'commerce'. And in keeping on this trajectory - I have become increasingly more emotionally authentic in my music, writing and my relationship to my audience. As so many of you have given me your heart and soul over the past 10 years I thought it only fitting that I too return the respect and inform you of the most significant event in my life.

On June 19th 2006 I married my boyfriend of two years, Richard, in a Civil Partnership ceremony in London.

I can honestly say it was the happiest day of my life.

I feel lucky to live in an era where my relationship can be considered legally legitimate and I commend the UK Government for embracing this very basic Civil Liberty.

I'm proud of who I am, and after what felt like an eternity, I'm finally in a place where my heart is secure and content. And I can finally make sense of all of the searching.

I still maintain the belief that families and relationships are not commodities to be sold off for public consumption. In this regard, I am and will continue to be a public person with a private life.

I have always written songs about human relationships and our journey in life. I've never felt the need to differentiate or speak to a specific part of society. This hasn't changed. I will continue to write songs for everybody and hope that the feelings and thoughts I sing about are universal. Today, as I get on a plane to return to London, my head will be filled with all the future possibilities that I hope to explore musically.

To the people who buy my records, come to my shows and demonstrate on a daily basis their love and support for me and what I do: thank you.

Your overwhelming message to me lately seems to be that you are just glad that I am happy. For this, I am eternally grateful.

To my Mum, Dad, Sister and Brother - thanks for always being so cool and loving me unconditionally.

With love and respect always
Darren Hayes

Webmistress Note; Congratulations Darren !!
Your fans love and support you, and wish you all the happiness you deserve!

Source: darrenhayes.com - Sunday, 09 July 2006

Darren Hayes & Columbia Records/Sony Music Part Ways
After 10 years and 24 million album sales together, Darren Hayes and Columbia Records/Sony BMG have decided to part ways.

The announcement comes after two sold out performances at Australia's Sydney Opera House last week as a part of his 'Big Night In' tour. The tour, which played to 30 thousand Uk fans earlier this year, has received rave reviews.

"The record industry has changed so much since I was first signed, and so have I" Hayes has said. "I'm grateful for the opportunities given to me but am excited about the prospect of a fresh new start."

Hayes will perform one final show in Bangkok next week before heading back into the studio to complete work on a brand new album set for a 2007 release on a new label.

DARREN HAYES TCFC TOUR VIDEO COMING SOON
Better Late Than Never
The first ever Darren Hayes concert film captured during his 2002 'Too Close For Comfort' tour is on it's way.

Filmed over the entirety of the UK and European leg and culminating in two glorious nights at London's Hammersmith Apollo Theatre - the film has been in and out of the editing room for the past 3 years.

The film, directed by Grant Marshall, is unique in it's approach. Not just a typical concert film - 'Too Close' features a radical approach to the presentation of the performance. It comprises footage from each and every night of the tour.

As well as a truly up close and personal approach to recreating the live experience, Darren has, for the first time ever, let cameras follow his every move. The unusually private artist lets his guard down and cameras capture his personality off stage like no one has ever seen.

The initial specially packaged DVD release will be produced in strictly limited quantities.

This collectors version will be individually numbered and feature intricate delux packaging. Once sold out, it will not be produced in this format again.

Check in with www.darrenhayes.com for more details soon. Limited version available only via dhcom website.

MUSIC - SAVAGE GARDEN - February 8, 2006
savage garden When Australian duo Savage Garden broke onto the global scene in 1997 with I Want You, the music media was quick to dub them the new INXS, perhaps due to the song’s particular dance vibe. However, aside from sharing the same nationality and a good-looking frontman, there was never really any comparison between the two acts. After all, in contrast to INXS’s rock-infused groove, Savage Garden was by and large a pop act and all the lads wanted to do was sing and perform their pop songs.

And Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones did exactly this only too well, striking gold and scoring hit after hit – well, 10 of them at least – in a space of just three years, selling enough records to make them one of the most successful duos of all time. The biggest and best known of their hit singles, besides the breakthrough I Want You, has to be the largely melodic and highly infectious To The Moon And Back, still a radio favourite after all these years. Other noteworthy tracks include Break Me, Shake Me and The Animal Song, which highlighted a harder pop edge to Savage Garden pop design. To add extra appeal (or maybe just to top up the CD’s total duration) this compilation also features five of the band’s B-sides as well as two brand new songs from singer Darren Hayes, who has, since the duo’s split four years ago, established himself as a solo artist with varying levels of success!

DARREN WILL CELEBRATE HIS BIRTHDAY IN BELFAST
Source: Belfast Telegraph - By Maureen Coleman
Savage Garden star's Belfast birthday bash
Aussie celebrates with gig

Darren Hayes Tour There'll be birthday celebrations for singer Darren Hayes when he brings his tour to Belfast in May. And the former frontman of Savage Garden is inviting his Ulster audience to join in.

The Aussie-born popstar, who plays the Waterfront Hall on May 7, turns 34 the following day and intends to stay on in the city to mark the occasion. But he says being on stage in Belfast is the best birthday present he could wish for. "I absolutely love touring and I love coming to Ireland," he said.

"I've been to Belfast before and had a great time.

"I broke off recording my third solo album to go on tour, so being on stage will be the best birthday present.

"And this time, the show is going to be a bit more theatrical and interactive. I'm going to encourage audience participation, you know, like getting people up on stage, which should be interesting.

"I can't think of a better way to mark my birthday."

Darren will also be hoping that there is no repeat of an embarrassing moment that happened the last time he played here in 2002.

"There was a problem with the lighting and the smoke alarm went off. It was a bit mad," he said.

On this tour, entitled "A Big Night In With.......", Darren has worked with US staple Willie Williams to create a show with a twist. "I met with Willie when I was coming out of Savage Garden. He's a great person to work with," he said. "He helped me design this tour, which is kind of surreal, given the fact that he works with the biggest band in the world. Actually he's heading off again to meet U2 in Australia.

"Both of us were quite bored with pop music and pop shows, so we decided to create something a bit different. Nothing is done behind the scenes. Even my costume changes will be on stage."

TRULY MADLY COMPLETELY REVIEW
Source: GayWired.com
Savage Garden: Truly, Madly, Completely
(*** out of four)
Savage Garden lead singer Darren Hayes has one of the purest sounding instruments in music today. Whicvh is why it’s a damn shame that most of his recordings these days are only enjoyed overseas. After his two-album stateside run with Savage Garden, he put out a poorly received solo set and then made a beeline back toward international waters.

Which is what makes Truly, Madly, Completely all the more irresistible. It’s all of Savage Garden’s hits (plus a few songs that never got radio airplay but probably should have), a few of Hayes on his own and a reminder that this duo (including Daniel Jones… can’t forget him) put out some damn good music. At first listen, a few of their more schmaltzy tracks (“I Knew I Loved You” comes to mind) echo early Backstreet Boys. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find expert lyricism, intoxicating hooks and Hayes’ oh so lovely voice.

Not to mention the oh-so lovely man with the oh-so lovely voice. Three stars for now… Four if they repackage this bad boy with a pull out poster.

NEW MESSAGE FROM DARREN - January 26 2006
One more day in beautiful Park City Utah.

Friday is my final Music Cafe performance and then I'm off to spend one perfect day in San Francisco before heading back to London and tour preparations.

Went with friends up to the top of a mountain today (yeah I went skiing a couple times!) and underestimated the affect fear factor would have on my beginner friend. Let's just say one lesson wasn't enough for her and she ended up getting a lift down on a snowmobile!!

If I'm honest, I did fear for my arms and legs a few times myself. Glad to be back here in my hotel room and looking forward to singing one final time before we leave.

That's it. Off to have a hot tub. Ooh it's tough at Sundance.

DARREN HAYES SO BEAUTIFUL REVIEW - Jan 5 2006
Single Review for - 'So Beautiful' - DARREN HAYES
'Truly Madly Completely,' an upcoming greatest-hits package from pop duo Savage Garden, clearly indicates just how much U.S. top 40 radio has deteriorated in the five-plus years since such indelible hits as 'I Want You' and 'Truly Madly Deeply' permeated the airwaves. But thankfully, lead Darren Hayes contributes to the collection 'So Beautiful,' which shimmers with the same melodic savvy and intelligent lyrical moxie that characterized earlier works. While this track will likely be relegated to adult contemporary radio, what a treasure it will be for a format lacking much individuality nowadays. Luxuriant harmonies; the comforting, familiar vocal style; the handsome, loving lyric . . . all exquisite. Wouldn`t it be phenomenal if this opened a new chapter here? We should be so lucky. Source
