A BIG NIGHT IN WITH DARREN HAYES The name says it all really.
To celebrate 10 years as a recording artist Darren Hayes has announced plans for a tour in 2006, performing songsfrom his Savage Garden and Solo career... with a twist!
But don't expect to just sit back and be entertained. You may end up on stage with him. The show, designed and directed by long term collaborator and U2 staple Willie Williams promises to blow the lid off the conventionalpop show and reveal what only insiders have known for the longest time.Darren Hayes is not just an extraordinary live singer. He's charming, funny, confessional and honest. And he's inviting you into hisliving room to demonstrate.
After selling a phenomenal 23 million plus records in his career, and coming off the back of this year's release of 'Truly Madly Completely -The Best of Savage Garden’ - Darren found himself at a crossroads. As an artist, the tug to milk your past has always been a strong one, but Hayeshas never been one for living in the past. The release of a 'Best Of' this year has forced Hayes to embrace his past. He has chosen to use this experienceo shape his future musical plans.
The unusually fame shy yet studio savvy Hayes has never done anything by convention. So in the middle of recording tracks for his yet to be released 3rd solo album, Hayes called time out. He sat down with friend and creative sparring partner Willie Williams to inject a healthy dose of ironyand a much needed sense of retrospect into his back catalogue to gain perspective. Rather than run from the past. He's embracing it. A creative cleaning out of the closet, if you will, live and on tour, before finishing work on his next record.
And Hayes is adamant audiences can expect to hear all the songs they know.
"As a fan of bands who've split up, like Eurythmics, or the countless incarnations of Fleetwood Mac, I understand the desire to hear songsyou know, solo or otherwise. And as an audience member, there's nothing worse than going along to see someone you adore and they play the obscure Japanese onlyb-sides!" Hayes explains."At this point in my career, I'm at the half way point. I want the next half to be better than the first. That's a huge challenge to set myself.
But it's important for me to look back and say thanks and goodbye to this period my music so that I can apply that to my future. I'm asking myself questions like "What worked? What didn't? What do I want to explore further? What song do I never want to hear again?"
With his experience from designing U2's most extravagant and intelligent shows, as well as the pop sensibilities of stage theatre (We Will Rock You) Willie Williamspromises a show that reveals the 'hidden weapon' that not many people know Hayes possesses. Without giving too much away, Willie's concepts for the show go beyond Karaoke. The show is truly interactive. Fans should turn up prepared to be singled out!
